Hi, I'm Marianne Augenstein.  I have been teaching at St. Mary's for the past 4 years.  I have a B.S. in Elementary Education and Literature/Writing and an M.A. in Reading from Potsdam College.

We all enjoyed a busy and exciting Catholic Schools Week in late January.  One of our favorite activities was the Invention Convention, during which we used K-Nex to build cars, roller coasters, houses and even 3 replicas of the Eiffel Tower!  Now every classroom has its own set, and we won't mind staying in for recess if the weather's not nice!
In Language Arts, we wrote "How To" articles and gave presentations to the class.  Everyone showed how to do something different.  Abraham showed us how to carve a wooden spoon, Jacob made cookies and Katherine demonstrated origami.  We all learned something new.
Now we are finishing up our Novel Partners Projects and writing descriptive stories.  We just finished reading aloud the entire Spiderwick Chronicles series.  We can't wait to see the movie when it comes out.
In math, we are learning to be smart shoppers by finding unit rates and proportions.  In science, we have been doing a unit on DNA and inheritance.  In Social Studies, we have been learning about the Aztecs.  Each student is constructing a folding book about this unit called a "Codex", complete with drawings, maps and lots of neat facts.
We have also begun to practice for our 6th grade play, The Princess and the Snails which will take place in April.  Stay tuned to hear what the 6th grade is up to next.
