A Welcome extends beyond an initial greeting. When you are welcomed into someone’s home, they don’t just greet you at the door and then let you fend for yourself. That’s not welcoming. Instead they care for you, concern themselves with your concerns, and want you to be the best that you can be. In short, they treat you with love and respect.
At St. Mary’s welcoming involves service in all its forms: from our bereavement dinners, to our thrift shop, from our respect life work to our support of the food pantry. This is where our service to one another is seen. A genuine welcome—embodied in our service to our community—is never momentary. We are called to treat each other as Christ in our midst: “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40). Where do you fit into this welcome?
